Why this list exists
The founder's stack is the second-most-important decision you will make this year.
Most founders I work with are running a business on tools they chose in a hurry, several years ago, and have been meaning to review ever since.
The result is usually the same. A slow inbox, a scattered project system, a client-facing experience that leaks trust in small, expensive ways, and a founder who spends thirty minutes a day switching between platforms that were supposed to save time.
Every year I audit the stack I run inside Telling Designs and publish the tools I actually use. Not affiliate lists. Not aspirational software. The ten tools the studio is actively operating on this year, and the reason each one has earned its place.
The 2026 edition is available below.
What is inside
What you will get.
The download includes the ten tools currently in daily use at Telling Designs across five categories:
Strategic thinking and writing. The tools I use to draft, refine, and structure the strategic work — the same tools that support the Tellingpoint methodology.
Client management and communication. The systems that hold the client relationship together from first application to final invoice.
Design and creative delivery. The core tools every deliverable is produced through.
Studio operations. The behind-the-scenes tools that keep the practice running when I am in deep client work.
AI and thinking partners. The AI tools currently earning their place in the studio, and the ones I have quietly removed this year.
For each tool, the list includes what it is used for, what it replaced, what it costs, and whether it is worth switching to if your existing tool is close.
Who this is for
For the founder building it properly.
This resource is useful for:
Founders and startup owners setting up the studio, agency, or practice they want to run for the next decade.
Small businesses and consultancies in the first three to five years, looking to consolidate a messy stack into something that runs cleanly.
Anyone about to sign a twelve-month software contract who wants a considered adviser's read on whether the tool is worth committing to.
It is not a list of the newest tools, the cheapest tools, or the trendiest tools. It is the ten tools that continue to earn their place inside a working strategic practice — reviewed and republished every year.
